Ahem. Where was I?
Ah yes, Tanya Donelly.
Co-founder of the wonderful Throwing Muses and The Breeders, founding member of the brilliant Belly and then…well, a solo career which has caught my attention to such an extent that I didn’t realise she’d had one.
But now she’s back! Back!! BACK!!! (Obligatory oblique Smash Hits reference for you there)
With The Parkington Sisters (nope, me neither) in tow, she’s released an album of rather wonderful cover versions, inspirationally titled Tanya Donelly and the Parkington Sisters.
With covers ranging from Leonard Cohen to Echo & the Bunnymen via The Go-Go’s, it’s an acoustic-guitar-and-strings slice of loveliness.
Minus points to whoever wrote the sleeve notes and who describes the version of Days as a Kirsty MacColl cover; I love Kirsty but hers is, of course, a cover version of a Kinks record.
But Tanya’s back, so I’ll let that slide.
Here’s a cover of one of my favourite records ever, a tune written by Mike Nesmith of The Monkees, most famously previously covered by Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys, but you’ll not be surprised to learn (particularly if you’ve read me mention it before) that I’m a bit partial to The Lemonheads version. Not to mention the Matthew Sweet and Susannah Hoffs version which I’ve never actually got round to posting.
