Late Night Stargazing

Did I mention that I love The Wedding Present?

They’re without doubt the band I’ve seen more than any other since I first saw them way back in 1988, and now I manage to go see them at least once a year.

A couple of years ago, I caught them performing the album that tonight’s song is from – 1994’s Watusi – which is an often-overlooked gem in my book.

For those of you who think they’re a bit of a one-trick pony I urge you to listen to this and see just how utterly wrong you are:

The Wedding Present – Spangle

Just plain heart-achingly gorgeous.

    1. You’ll have a blast, of course. I’ve never seen them have an off night, and I’ve seen them A L-O-T over the years. I’ll not call you a slacker for the 25 year lay-off, rather I’ll ask where you’re seeing them?

  1. Watusi is my least favourite Weddoes album. I never took to it when it first came out. It lacks the tunes of all their others and sounds quite lightweight in too many places. It’s the only record of theirs I can’t describe as “quite brilliant”.

    1. You need to give it another listen, Rob. I agree, lead single “Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah” is not their finest moment, but scratch the surface and there are so many absolute gems on it. But, a word of warning: not for nothing do I describe it as “their pop album”.

  2. This one does seem to split fans. I seem to recall retired blogger and all-around good chap Friend of Rachel Worth ranking it his favorite. George Best for me.

    1. Oh, yes. GB for me as my fave. But it gets a bad rap for having the audacity to not sound like a WP record…and of course Gedge stopped making WP records for a few years after this. Consider it a bridging album between WP and Cinerama, I think.
