How Not To Do a Cover Version

When todays examples got released as singles back in 1998 and 1999, I swear I have never come closer to smashing my radio whenever they got played.

Here’s three ways that they managed to get right on my tits:

  1. Replaced the original distinctive and gorgeous original vocal with something/someone utterly bland and forgettable;
  2. Added a totally unnecessary, crappy, tinny drum track;
  3. Ensured they had sucked every last fucking drop of life out of the original.

Like this, basically:

And then, just to add insult to injury, Tin Tin Ouch Out went and repeated the trick a year later, only this time with someone you’ve actually heard of providing the diluted vocal.

Original distinctive and gorgeous original vocal replaced by something utterly bland and forgettable? Check.

Totally unnecessary, crappy, tinny drum track added? Check.

Every last ounce of joie de vivre systematically removed? Check.

Just to hammer home how awful that version is, I was going to post the video too. But I figured we’ve all been traumatised enough this week without being subjected to the spectacle of  Ms. Bunton dancing around with just a shirt on for just shy of four minutes, a shirt which the cameraman seems determined to look down at every possible opportunity. (If YouTube breaks now, it’s all your fault, you dirty sods).

  1. You’re crazy! Here’s where the story ends was one of the biggest hits of the year and won an Ivor Novello award, and majorly surpassed the original. I think it’s YOU who has dubious taste.

    1. Hi David. Thank you for visiting a post I wrote four years ago. It’s always refreshing to hear from people who have finally grasped how Google works. Your points are all valid, of course, because musical taste is subjective, but if you’ll allow me to respond:

      1. “Here’s where the story ends was one of the biggest hits of the year”: Yes it probably was, but that’s neither the point I was making nor a guarantee of quality. Remember Jive Bunny?

      2. “…won an Ivor Novello award.” Ivor Novellos are song-writing awards, so if Here’s Where the Story Ends was awarded one (and it may have been, I can’t be bothered with checking, because, again, that’s not the point) then rightly it belongs to those who wrote it rather than those who added a drum beat and got someone with the vocal range of a wet sock to sing it

      3. If by “majorly surpassed” you mean “sold more”, then again, you’re probably right. But that doesn’t make the Tin Tin Out version better, just more commercially successful. Lots of people like Coldplay, it doesn’t make them right, does it? For further information, please see point 1.

      4. “I think it’s YOU who has dubious taste”: irony’s not a strong point of yours, right?
